Sakaï 2: Structuring a Landmark Renewable Energy Project

The Sakaï 2 Solar Power Plant represents a major milestone in the Central African Republic’s energy infrastructure development. Located in Bimbo, near Bangui, the project is designed to strengthen electricity generation, improve supply reliability, and expand access to electricity for households and businesses.

With a reported investment of US$90 million, the project brings together international private investment, public-sector coordination, and national electricity infrastructure. Developed by Global South Utilities (GSU), the facility combines large-scale solar generation with battery storage to support the country’s evolving energy needs.

Maaten Partners provided structuring advisory, helping introduce the investment opportunity, coordinate stakeholders, and structure the terms of engagement between the developer, public authorities, and ENERCA, the national electricity utility. Its involvement extended through negotiations and construction, supporting alignment between the parties as the project progressed toward commissioning.

With a planned capacity of up to 65 MW and an expected reach of approximately 300,000 households, Sakaï 2 illustrates how effective project structuring and strategic partnerships can help mobilize capital for essential infrastructure and accelerate the energy transition in Central Africa.
